Train ride

Osim na srpskom, sa vremena na vreme napišem nešto i na engleskom. Ovo je jedna priča koju sam napisao na temu ''100 years from now'' za konkurs za kratku priču (do 300 reči) časopisa New Scientist. Neke od pobednika možete da pročitate ovde.

The morning sky-train was crowded as usual. Barry was running late, so he had to be pushed in by the station ushers. The door barely managed to close behind him.

Train pulled out and started to accelerate.

Barry blinked.

In his mind, he saw a young anchorwoman and an older man discussing the news. Apparently, there was a big explosion at some Chinese industrial complex. He got all the info immediately: location, amount of damage, orbital video and still photos, background story, possible perpetrators and so forth.

Barry didn’t care about China, but the young, gorgeous news presenter made him blink again.

Now, two shorthaired girls, dressed in full police riot gear, were kissing behind his eyes. The black gear started to come off, and Barry felt a well-known tingling sensation beneath his belt. An old lady that was standing right in front of him looked up and smiled. Barry managed to smile back before he turned around and blinked.

A giant cartoon squid was telling him that school was good. In Japanese.

Blink.

Fat man with a huge moustache was singing a Bengali folk song.

Blink.

Presidents of USA and Brazil answering questions about the next joint Mars mission, surrounded by metadata streams. Barry didn’t have anything to ask them so he blinked.

Porn.

Blink.

Strange and very popular subliminal art video he didn’t like.

Blink.

Serbian family sitcom. He didn’t get a single joke.

Blink.

Another boring documentary about the recent confirmed extinction of whales.

Blink. Blink. Blink.

Images, sounds, text and every other conceivable information continued to pass through his mind before he turned his neuron-link off.

Ten thousand channels and there’s nothing on, Barry thought to himself.

That was his first truly independent thought since he woke up.
